Charlene Michael began her years of teaching in 1989 at a horsemanship camp in Ohio as Riding Program Director and Assistant Stable Manager. In 1990 she received her Level 1-4 English and Level 1-3 Western Certification from Certified Horsemanship Association. She has taught at various barns and equestrian programs in the Greater Pittsburgh and Western Ohio areas over the years. She has continued her education by taking lessons and courses, auditing seminars and participating in and auditing clinics from top level international jumping & dressage riders and trainers. She served as the 2012-13 Westminster College Equestrian Team hunter seat equitation coach competing in the Intercollegiate Horse Showing Association (IHSA). Currently serving as an assistant coach of Duquesne University Hunt Seat Team and FHS IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) middle & high school team (IEA). She is a US Pony Club D & C examiner/ rater. She is a professional member of the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), and former chairman of the Western Pennsylvania Professional Horsemen’s Association (WPaPHA).
She has enjoyed teaching all ages and levels of students over the last 30 years. She is excited to be working with her students, whatever their level, in setting attainable short and long term goals. She is a firm believer in coaching them to success, whether it be for pleasure or toward competitive riding. She earnestly desires for them to come to a deep understanding of the incredible relationship between horse and rider, encouraging them to hone their general horsemanship skills in and out of the saddle. She teaches with a strong emphasis on proper, classical equitation basics and how they directly relate to the horse’s ability to perform under saddle. The success of her students speaks for itself.
